Summer Reading List For Information About Torture

13 June, 2007 (17:17) | Reading List

June is not just the first month of summer. June is also Torture Awareness Month, with Torture Awareness Day observed on June 26th with discussions, vigils, and protests. In the mode of this month’s mindfulness about torture, I suggest that you ditch the trashy, trivial stuff that’s traditional for summer reading, and read up about the very scary non-fiction of the history of torture’s rise to its present level in the American Homeland Security regime.

Here’s my suggested list for starters. Does anyone have other suggestions?

American Torture: From the Cold War to Abu Ghraib and Beyond by Michael Otterman

A Question of Torture: CIA Interrogation, from the Cold War to the War on Terror by Alfred Mccoy

Fear Up Harsh: An Army Interrogator’s Dark Journey Through Iraq by Tony Lagouranis, Allen Mikaelian

Ghost Plane: The True Story of the CIA Torture Program by Stephen Grey

Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic by Chalmers Johnson
